A friend of my recently called me to express concern over a Homeopathic remedy and whether or not it was safe to use. She told me that she was giving her son Humphreys Original Teething Pellets #3 to soothe his pain during dentition and that she heard the remedy contained Heroin. She was concerned as any mother would be. Although I wasn’t sure exactly what Humphreys was, or whether or not it actually contained Heroin, I understand the basic foundation of Homeopathy and so I was certain that her son would be safe to continue the remedy. I shared a quick lesson on dilution and the theory that “Like Cures Like” with her but wasn’t able to go into a deeper explanation; I decided it might be helpful to post a blog on the matter.
Although Homeopathy is widely used in other parts of the world, it isn’t as well known in America, and can sometimes be misunderstood. The practice itself was developed in Germany over 200 years ago and has been present in the U.S. since the 19th century. The foundation of Homeopathy is “Like Cures Like” – which simply means an aliment can be cured by a substance that produces similar symptoms of illness in healthy individuals.
Homeopathy can be used to treat acute symptoms like shock, bruising from a fall, bee stings and teething as well as chronic conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, depression, digestive disorders and asthma. When prescribing, Homeopaths utilize a whole person approach. The treatment is tailored based on health history, body type, emotional, physical and mental symptoms.
The bigger question is, how does it work? Remedies are made by diluting a substance in a stepwise fashion. Between each step, the substance is vigorously shaken in a process known as potenization. Shaking transmits the energy of the substance to the final diluted remedy. The essence of the substance remains with the dilution and this essence is what stimulates the body to heal.
Humphreys Original Teething Pellets #3 contain Chamomilla, Coffea cruda, Belladonna and Calcarea phosphorica. Chamomilla is used to soothe the baby. It is often indicated for a crying child who is comforted by being held. Coffea cruda is used to calm the baby and is also indicated for those who are extremely sensitive to pain. Belladonna is a classic anti-inflammatory remedy that works extremely well for children. It is indicated for red, hot, throbbing pain. Calcarea phosphorica is an important tissue remedy indicated for dentition; it can be useful for painful and slow dentition.
Homeopathy is a useful tool in a number of ways: it works exceptionally well on children and is minimally invasive. I have had success in treating chronic and acute conditions with Homeopathic remedies. And although it all seems a bit magical and hard to believe, I think that medicine should contain a little bit of magic – that’s what keeps it interesting.
