Do you know what Genetically Modified Foods or GMOs are? According to NonGMOProject.org, “GMOs, or “genetically modified organisms,” are plants or animals created through the gene splicing techniques of biotechnology (also called genetic engineering, or GE). This experimental technology merges DNA from different species, creating unstable combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that cannot occur in nature or in traditional crossbreeding.”
What does this mean for you? The sad truth is that the long term effects of consuming GMOs are largely unknown. Yet, most developed nations consider GMOs to be unsafe and in nearly 50 countries around the world there are significant restrictions and bans on the production and sale of GMOs. Unfortunately for the American consumer, the U.S. government has approved GMOs based on studies created by the very corporations that created them and profit greatly from their sale.
If you’re interested in learning more about GMOs, I recommend Seeds of Deception by Jeffrey M. Smith. Mr. Smith is an international speaker and an expert on Genetically Modified Foods. I had the opportunity to hear him speak on the subject at the annual AANP convention and it was an eye opening experience.
This month, be aware of what you consume. Visit http://www.NonGMOProject.org for more information and helpful shopping guides to avoid consuming GMOs.
